sometimes a sweet potato looks like a sea lion

...with a funny hairdoo.

"I started in Japan"

...which is what the fine print reads here. Whether they ended up in Ventura or were just passing through is unclear.

the Ventura River

...the way it looked that day, spilling steadily into the ocean.

Amgen starting line...

...the way it looked at the Ventura pier. Amgen is a Thousand Oaks-based biotech company that sponsors the Tour of California, which is sort of the California counterpart to the Tour de France. The cyclists come from all over the world.

the return of the snakefly

I hadn't seen a snakefly in a long time. I was wondering where they went!

multicolored artichoke leaves

Nature and the plant world are full of repeating forms, and much in the way a sprig of broccoli resembles a tree, these tulip petals remind me of artichoke leaves.

St. Mark's in-the Valley

Another highlight of Los Olivos was this exceptional church, both architecturally and in the way it welcomed visitors, providing clean bathrooms, tranquility, and a labyrinth! The design is contemporary but retains the spirit of older Episcopal and Anglican churches.

Los Olivos

Tiny Los Olivos, CA was another place I had long been curious about. And what a wonderful, curious place it is! Historic and charming, with more wineries than infrastructure, the entire town is on sceptic, and the phone signals are spotty. These photos were taken at the Corner House Cafe, the only coffee shop but a fantastic one, with decent coffee and a sprawling patio shaded by large trees.

wisteria tree?

The curious case of wisteria apparently growing on the trunk of a dead tree, thus giving the appearance of a "wisteria tree"... Or is a wisteria tree like this possible? Seen in front of a popular restaurant in Santa Ynez, CA.

S.Y. Kitchen

A very fine restaurant in a rural setting... I was blown away by the onion soup, and the complimentary birthday desert! A highlight of Santa Ynez...

Santa Ynez

I had for a long time wanted to check out tiny Santa Ynez, CA. For its charm, and the way it straddles sophisticated Santa Barbara and the cowboy Central Coast, I was not disappointed. Above, their tiny branch library.

Soule Park

The pictures don't do it justice, but this was a nice, clean, peaceful county park near Ojai to discover and pass some of our late afternoon on a warm, windless spring day. (At least in Ojai it was warm and windless; Ventura was another story).

Limon y Sal

Limon y Sal in downtown Ventura, the way it looked the day before Cinco de Mayo. This was our first visit to this historic space.
