A very interesting place that I didn't even know existed. The story goes that the place was established by people who broke down here, in the middle of nowhere, and some how managed to build dwellings out of these fantastical-looking boulders.

Somewhere north of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and south of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which could be seen from the viewing station below. Never had the "staircase" of colored cliffs been so visible to me. As a fan of wide-open spaces, I did not mind exploring this area.

In addition to the excellent trails for walking the dogs, the 3,700-acre sanctuary also has some excellent hiking trails for people. We hiked a few a them and in the distance could see the neighboring Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

After touring Best Friends Animal Sanctuary there is the option of volunteering for different lengths of time. We decided to come back the following day and help out at "Dogtown" - feeding, kennel-cleaning and walking some wonderful older dogs. Some of the dogs have health and behavioral issues, but with professional veterinarians and dog handlers on staff they are in excellent hands.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park

 

The idea of a Utah state park called Coral Pink Sand Dunes, located across the road from Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, was too appealing to resist. On the down side, the road to the park seemed to take forever. Also, it was strangely overcast. Otherwise the place delivered exactly what it promised: coral pink sand dunes.
