Copper Range Depot

Our dinner restaurant was located in the old 1899-built Copper Range Railroad Depot, so there were nice sides of local history and railroad history to go with our food. It was a big, solid building with lots of railroad memorabilia displayed throughout. The other reason we came here was to try whitefish, a fish common to the Great Lakes region that we had never sampled before. Can't remember what we thought of it.

Hampton by Hilton Houghton

I was endlessly amused by the sound of our next destination: Hampton by Hilton, Houghton. The hotel was well situated in the center of town, and had this wonderful view of the Keweenaw Waterway and the boat that takes the long 6-hour trip to Isle Royale National Park - Houghton being one of the gateways to that park. And yes, that is a ski slope on the other side - Mont Ripley.

U.P. rest stop

A rest stop somewhere between Marquette and Houghton, MI. As I recall this stop had a babbling brook, a bridge, and a hiking trail that we checked out until it got overgrown.

Marquette, MI

Maybe it was the weather but Marquette had a certain bleakness that all the heavy stone architecture seemed to accentuate. But this remote, far northern college town was not without some charm. I liked our lunch in the Trenary Toast Cafe (corner shop above), a vegetarian restaurant seemingly run by students.

Lake Superior waves

Somewhere on the drive from Munising to Marquette we pulled over and had a look at Lake Superior. Needless to say the weather had shifted and the lake was no longer as smooth as a baby's bottom. 

Munising, MI sunrise

As mentioned before the Holiday Inn in Munising had an incredible view of the bay between Grand Island and the mainland. What we didn't know till the morning was what a great sunrise this location had. First I saw people sitting on the terrace sipping coffee and watching the sunrise. Then I realized that this terrace was also seating for breakfast. And so we had a memorable breakfast!

Tracey's

After the Pictured Rocks Cruise we dined at Tracey's at Roam Inn, which was a good choice - interesting cocktails, cheese curds, and some sort of veggie noodle concoction (not pictured). Then, according to my notes, Mrs. had trout (also not pictured).
