approach to Avalon

It's a nice ride on the high speed ferry and takes about an hour to reach the island. When you get a glimpse of the famous Catalina Casino you know that you have reached Avalon.

Port of Los Angeles

The Port of Los Angeles unloads more goods from China than anywhere else. It is amazing watch this massive winch installation lift containers from ship to truck. Below, leaving the port via Catalina Express.

Catalina Express

The amazing boat that will take you from the Port of Los Angeles to Catalina Island for free on your birthday!

the coffee bush in Balboa Park

One of the handful of coffee shrubs alive and well in the Golden State.

Cabrillo National Monument

All the way at the end of Point Loma is Cabrillo National Monument, the best part of which is the fantastic view that includes all of San Diego Bay and beyond into Mexico.

the other Shelter Island

Having grown up with the east coast Shelter Island I was naturally curious to experience the west coast Shelter Island, situated in the greater San Diego area. What I found was this beautiful pavilion facing San Diego Bay and a whole lotta boat activity - marinas etc. It's actually a nice place to watch the ships come and go, including some rather large naval vessels.

Maple Canyon

The somewhat obscure Maple Canyon in San Diego, better known to dog walkers.
