This 135-acre nature preserve is found at the end of a dirt drive on the edge of Santa Fe. In addition to being a nice slice of nature, brimming with birds, it features the home of artist Randall Davey. The home was originally a sawmill built in 1847, back when Santa Fe was a U.S. military outpost. Evidently the lumber was used to build nearby Fort Marcy.
Whenever I travel I like to encounter at least one new bird. There were feeders set up and one particular bird kept reappearing. With the help of an on-site employee it was identified as a Mountain Chickadee.
This place was an unexpected surprise.
