From the patio of Apache Plume we got one of the birding highlights of the year: a Phainopepla at close range and in plain sight. I had been wanting to see this distinctive desert bird for years. It seemed to inhabit the trees just beyond the lodging, so had we not stayed in this end unit we may never had seen it.
I’ve definitely heard that bird before, during our other stays there, but first time seeing it for me too, I think.
