Just across the delta from Benecia is the city of Martinez and the John Muir National Historic Site, places I had long heard about. I have a lot of respect for John Muir, a fascinating man whose convictions about the importance of the natural world to the human soul made a lasting, positive contribution to American culture and the world. So naturally it was delightful to tour his house and property (where he operated a fruit orchard) and learn more details about him. Also on the property is the Martinez Adobe (bottom photo), built in 1849 by Don Vincente Martinez, a beneficiary of the Spanish-Mexican land grant system. Muir's Victorian mansion was built in 1883.
