What struck me was that even though we were on top of the Sierras, some five to six thousand feet in elevation, at no point did I feel precariously high up, nor did the ascent feel particularly steep. This was due of course to the success of the engineers who planned and built the track. The strategically placed tunnels (below), created with enormous labor and still in use today, also played a role.
Ski runs (below) are another common sight at this elevation.
