Esplanade

The word esplanade was originally synonymous with promenade, and both words originally meant a long, level open area, usually running along a body of water. Later, in the United States, an additional meaning was added, referring to a street with a strip of land in the middle. This latter meaning definitely applies to Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans.
