I finally identified the beetle that appeared on the menu, thanks to the handy "info" button on my camera. It's Anomala orientalis, commonly known as Oriental beetle, a native of Asia and now emerging as an exotic pest in the eastern U.S. Like many insect pests it probably hitched a ride on nursery stock. The amount of damage it can inflict on plants can be compared to the better known Japanese beetle, which is roughly the same size.
