The tiny town of Tubac was the first European settlement in Arizona, established by the Spanish as a garrison in 1752. This makes it older than San Xavier del Bac, but over the course of its turbulent history - which included attacks by Confederate soldiers and Apache Indians - its original structures were lost. Ruins of the old Presidio can be seen at Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, and parts were restored by a neighboring artists colony (above). Some later historic buildings remain, such as the 1868 Pennington-Cabot house (below). Did I mention that the javelinas were here first?
Boy those javelinas are colorful. Must be something in the water.
