From the deck of the Matanuska we could see the Ketchikan Airport across the narrows on Gravina Island. To get to the airport one must take a ferry boat across the narrows. Personally I think this is fabulously unusual. What I didn't know at that moment was that Alaska's famous "bridge to nowhere" was a plan to build a bridge across the narrows here. Well... besides wondering how all those cruise ships would pass under the proposed bridge, I think the ferry system has a lot of charm and originality and should be preserved.
Ahhh yes, I was I wondering why they didn’t have a bridge- the cruise ships would present a bit of a problem.
