French Quarter

I couldn't resist a taste of Charleston's French Quarter, even if it was raining. The "Old World" European vibe of the streets and architecture immediately brought to mind the other "Vieux Carré" over in New Orleans. The one here is actually older, founded by Huguenot merchants in 1680, whereas the one in New Orleans was founded in 1718. In one case the founders were fleeing the French state, and in the other they were representing it. In both cases it's the oldest part of the city and the feeling of antiquity is palpable.

  1. A cleaner version of the N.O. French Quarter.
