Reconstruction Era NHP

Across the street from the old arsenal is the headquarters of the Reconstruction Era National Historic Park - an obscure Obama addition to the NPS portfolio. The historic significance lies in the fact that Beaufort was one of the first parts of the Confederacy to fall under Union Army control. As a result much of the groundwork for Reconstruction was first laid there. This included, among other things, setting up an education system for freed slaves.
