Live to Eat

We finally made it to this delightful festival of Asian fusion.

Island Packers, part 3

Island Packers, part 2

I had never heard of "Ice Cream Cone Arch" before, but there it was on the north side of Anacapa Island. I suppose it does resemble and ice cream cone.

Island Packers

Island Packers revisited. Bad luck again with whales; good luck with weather and dolphins.

SRF Lake Shrine, part 4

There are stories behind all of these structures. We had the honor of meditating in the windmill.

SRF Lake Shrine, part 2

The Lake Shrine is only place outside of India where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi are enshrined. This is quite an honor for both California and the USA. His message of peace is more pressing then ever. To quote Yogananda, the creator of the shrine: "Alone among great leaders, Gandhi has offered a practical nonviolent alternative to armed might. The nonviolent voice of Gandhi appeals to man's highest conscience. Let nations ally themselves no longer with death, but with life; not with destruction, but with construction; not with hate, but with the creative miracles love."

SRF Lake Shrine

Although I had been here years ago, I must say that this second visit made an even deeper impression on me. The grounds are so well managed and well tended that even some 72 years after its opening the place feels pristine.

Juicy Ladies

A highly appropriate place to have lunch before our visit to the SRF Lake Shrine in Pacific Palisades. The food and atmosphere were nice, and the gluten-free cupcake knocked the ball out of the park. No longer being city folk, we were a bit shocked at the crazy parking situation (or lack thereof).

Dean: a coffee shop revisited

Since we were in the neighborhood we went back to Dean: a coffee shop two days in a row, this time to try out their toasts. I can vouch for their "goat toast" which is delicious and makes for a good light lunch.

Hotel Leta dinner

Perhaps the best thing about our stay at the Hotel Leta, along with the pool, was a very nice dinner on their patio. Lots of salad, some flatbread and a "fire-roasted" banana milkshake served with the thickest straws known to man.

Hotel Leta

Evidently an old chain hotel (Motel 6?) in Goleta purchased by Hilton and given "boutique" treatments, some of them formulaic (stick an Airstream over there, hang a surfboard from the ceiling here, etc). Still glad we checked it out.
