Emma Wood bike path

Since it's been paved, this stretch of bike path that runs along Emma Wood State Beach is possibly my favorite in the area. The ridge on the inland side protects you from wind and freeway noise. On this particular day there were dolphins close to shore.

juvenile black-crowned night herons

At the harbor we encountered these juvenile black-crowned night herons. I didn't know what they were at first since I had never seen the juveniles before.

popcorn

For the record: organic white popcorn, black pepper, curry powder, nutritional yeast, spray olive (or avocado) oil and Bragg liquid aminos.

Catalina cherries

In addition to Australian pines, the bike path also has a stand of Catalina Cherries in the same general area. These native cherries are more popular with birds than people.

cherry juice

When I started having knee trouble it was suggested that I start drinking cherry juice. After trying several brands I discovered that the best-tasting was Cheribundi (below, rhymes with barramundi). That brand was readily available in Louisiana, but back in California I could only find it in small bottles. The problem was solved when I discovered that Lakewood Organic Tart Cherry Blend (above) tasted just as good and is possibly even better as it comes in a glass bottle. So there you have it.

carrot ginger soup

The last best carrot ginger soup I ever had, from Bonzai Marina in Ventura. Quite salty, which is not a deal breaker for me.

bouquet scattered in the gloom

Australian pines of Ventura

There I was thinking that a person had to travel halfway around the world to see exotic Australian pines (Casuarina equisetifolia), when in fact they are found right here along the bike path. I thought they looked familiar, and when I looked on the ground I saw the very distinct cones. These trees have actually been growing in the States for many decades and are considered invasive in some parts.
