The Manhattan skyline had been completely reworked in recent years and this was a great way to take it in. Among other things I had my first glimpse of the recently created Little Island. The metropolis across from Lower Manhattan is Jersey City - apparently developed beyond recognition. The monolithic white sculpture on the waterfront is "Water Soul" by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. Just to the north of that is the Hoboken Terminal in Hoboken, NJ, built in 1907 (although this site has been ferrying people to Manhattan since colonial times). Lackawanna is short for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad - the company that owned and operated the service.
I remember first hearing about Little Island. I find the concept intriguing.
