While hiking in Bethpage State Park I encountered this trap for spotted lanternfly. I had heard of this troublesome pest of Chinese origin that was wreaking havoc in Pennsylvania. While associated with the widespread and invasive tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), there are at least 173 other plant species it is happy to dine on. To put it simply, these insects eat and destroy most plants.
Glad you saw only the trap and not the actual insect.
