A new point of interest along the "Monterey Bay Promenade" (which the city actually calls the "Recreation Trail") is this sign and mural showing the site of the Vizcaino-Serra Coast Live Oak. This prominent tree was the site of the claiming of Monterey for Spain in 1602 by Vizcaino and its official founding in 1770 by Serra.
It took me almost 60 years to learn of that tree and its significance.
