Sometimes while whale watching all you see of the whale is its back and a spout, as was the case above somewhere in the Santa Barbara Channel near the beginning of our trip... Not too long after that we encountered a pod of dolphins, extraordinary creatures that are also technically whales.
Always a highlight.
