The snowy egret is distinguished by its bright yellow feet, which much of the time are submerged in water while it feeds in shallow surf. Once upon a time their plumage was used for ladies' hats and their numbers got dangerously low. Thanks to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, their numbers have fully rebounded.
