When Taliesin West opened in 1937, there was no Scottsdale, AZ. It was just open desert on the outskirts of Phoenix. The place definitely has rough edges, but in a good way. Frank Lloyd Wright was a different kind of pioneer, imposing his vision on a raw canvas of desert.
