I knew that Salt Lake City had a grand old train depot, but I didn't know it had two. This one, down the street from our hotel, is the Rio Grande Depot - opened in 1910 and used by Amtrak up until 1999. Today it houses the Utah State Historical Society. The other old station is the Union Pacific Depot - opened in 1908 and used by Amtrak up until 1986. This other station was the grander of the two and had a big Union Pacific emblem right on the facade. Somehow during my travels I had seen that station because I remember that emblem making an impression on me.
I wonder why neither old depot is in use today.
