Our maiden voyage over the famous Mackinac Bridge - the nation's third longest suspension bridge, over 26,000 feet long and some 200 feet above the water - was scary because there wasn't enough side wall for my taste. The towers by contrast were huge. We made it across and the reward was to set foot, for the first time, on Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
