Mackinac Island, part 2

From Windermere Point Park I could see Fort Mackinac perched on a hill. Built in 1782 it is the oldest building in Michigan. It was actually built by the British to replace a French fort, remained British throughout the American Revolutionary War, then was recaptured from the Americans during the War of 1812. Needless to say it was a strategic location overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. Of course it ended up in American hands, and in 1875 became the second U.S. national park after Yellowstone. Then in 1895 it became Michigan's first state park.

  1. The first of that type transfer that I have heard of. I’m sure there are more.
