Strolling around Mackinac Island, I encountered the former home of William Backhouse Astor, the son of John Jacob Astor who inherited his father's lucrative fur trading company. By coincidence I was reading a book about the older Astor's efforts to expand his business to the Pacific Coast. As I recall there was a point where he decided to center his business in the Great Lakes region, and that probably has something to do with the son having a house here.
Coincidence for sure.
