Who knew that Jacksonville, OR existed? A solid, historic town baking in the sun; a sort of musical counterpart to nearby Ashland, 18 miles east and much better known. Ashland has a Shakespeare festival whereas Jacksonville has a music festival. For a small town of about 3000 inhabitants, Jacksonville also has a huge amount of boutique lodging. Like many other western towns, the discovery of gold in the mid-19th century was the basis of its founding.
