When I first drove by the "Center of the World" a few years ago, I was neither expecting to see such a thing out in the middle of the desert, nor did I have any understanding of what it was. It's possible I still don't. What I do know is that it is the creation of Jacques-André Istel, a pioneer of recreational parachuting who emigrated to America as a child and served as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War.

It had to be explored.
