Due to a series of bad fires in recent years, some of the trails at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument were closed. The A'a Trail however was open - a trail that meanders through a rugged, 900-year-old lava field. The sight of pines and aspens growing up through the black lava was visually striking.
I would imagine the black lava and the burned debris cast an especially dark and contrasting background to the vibrant new growth.
