Along with the foxes, the other creatures on Santa Cruz Island that will do whatever it can to access your food are the ravens. They are intelligent and have been seen unzipping backpacks with their beaks. The safest bet is to store all food in the fox box provided at every picnic table and campsite (below).
Ah yes, very smart. Watching them, one can almost see their brains at work.
