common murre

We returned to Marina State Beach where I got a better look at this unusual and sadly deceased bird. To me it appeared to be a common murre, a bird described as a "flying penguin" and the penguin of the Northern Hemisphere. By all accounts a noteworthy bird. I sent a photo to the local Audubon Society, who confirmed its identity and said there are various reasons why these carcasses turn up on the beach. Thankfully they aren't endangered, and although abundant I don't recall ever seeing one. We later encountered another carcass in Monterey.

  1. So sad. I am glad to have finally seen one, but sure wish it had still been alive.
