Garfield

James A. Garfield was a soldier, statesman, gentleman and scholar - one of the most beloved presidents of all time - and yet today is almost completely forgotten. His humility and good character transcended party politics. All regions of the country respected him, including the South despite his having served as a Union general. Although capable of great things, his tenure was tragically cut short by a gun-toting lunatic. Perhaps even more than Lincoln or Kennedy, he embodied a certain American ideal.
