I guess I've known about this unique stretch of Carpinteria beach for years without actually visiting it till now. The naturally oozing tar was used by the Chumash people to seal their tomols (boats used to cross the channel). Tar Pits Park is found within Carpinteria State Beach. Did I mention that there was also a certain amount of June Gloom?
