Angel Oak

The Angel Oak on John's Island - just outside of Charleston, SC - is said to be the largest live oak tree east of the Mississippi and estimated to be 300-400 years old. Live oaks are thought to have a lifespan of 500-700 years, but in Brunswick, GA we encountered the one that claimed to be 900 years old. There's also a live oak in Mandeville, LA that claims to be the largest in the whole country. In other words, there are a lot of contradictory claims. Where's a good dendrologist when you need one? Regardless, a tree this large is a spectacular sight.

  1. This one seemed larger, and thus older, than the one in Georgia. But who knows? Certainly not me.
