U.S. Custom House


While strolling after dinner at S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) I was struck by this massive monument beaming in the evening sun. Ground was broken for its construction in 1852, but then the Civil War put the project on hold. Work was resumed in 1870. Why Charleston needed such an enormous custom house in the first place is a question I haven't found an answer to. If its purpose was to enchant me so many years later, it succeeded.
