The following morning I walked directly and as far west from the hotel as possible. I knew I would hit the Hudson River and the ferry terminal eventually, but in the meantime the west side just kept on going - 9th Avenue, 10th Avenue, 11th Avenue, 12th Avenue. Once you get there it's a different world. One of the first things I noticed was a cruise ship in the distance (below right). This is an overlooked side of Manhattan with a storied history - its numerous piers and ship terminals.
I hope you had on proper socks and good walking shoes for an enjoyable experience.
