Sloat Monument

After Serra's Landing, one of the most important events in Monterey history was Sloat's Landing in 1846. Commodore John Sloat captured of the city with relative ease at the outset of the Mexican-American War. Known as the Battle of Monterey, it was a "battle" completely devoid of combat. The "victory" was commemorated by this monument in 1910. This monument is big and must weigh a lot. Interestingly it is 31 feet high in honor of California being the 31st state admitted to the Union.

  1. Don’t think you had mentioned to me the relevance of 31’ in height. Interesting.
