arctic tern

The one new bird that I saw in Alaska is a significant one: the arctic tern is notable for migrating between the Arctic and the Antarctic, some 15,000 miles - the longest migration in the entire animal kingdom. They like the poles, but only if it's summertime. Its breeding grounds are in the north and as these blue signs informed us we were standing right next to them. Sure enough there they were, with calls and behaviors so distinct that I will never forget them.
